For the first time, IMFA organizes three-day workshop on ‘Publication Design & Typography’ at KU

Dept ropes in prominent publication designer of Asia to train students in designing

Srinagar, Oct 18: Vice-Chancellor Kashmir University Prof Nilofer Khan on Tuesday inaugurated the first of it’s kind three-day workshop on ‘Publication Design and Typography’ at KU’s Institute of Music and Fine Arts (IMFA).

Prof Nilofer Khan in her address emphasized the importance of engaging students in more and more interactive sessions through various training, seminars/workshop programmes.

Extending her best wishes to the IMFA for organizing the three-day workshop, in her address, she said, “These types of activities give confidence to the students and more and more activities and programmes should be held so that students are thrown open to get exposure of their concerned subjects”.

Notably, the IMFA has enlisted Jain Kamal, also known as Asia's first publication designer, to professionally train young students in publication design and typography over the course of the three-day seminar.

Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Jain Kamal stated that the event is the first of its kind in Asia on mass media and journalism and that it will last three days and cover more than 5000 topics ranging from selecting fonts for newspapers to advertising.

“The three-day event will showcase various range of designing skills from a selection of images, photos or fonts for the newspapers or magazines and we have more than 4000 plates by which more than 10,000 operators, Journalists, Bureaus and Editors have got trained and working in different parts of the world”, he said.

Prof Nilofer Khan urged students and IMFA faculty to take full advantage of Jain Kamal's experience and expertise with the larger goal of evolving as independent publication designers in the future.


Principal IMFA Dr. Ruby Zutshi told Rising Kashmir that the event is taking place for the first time in their department after the programme was discussed with other teaching faculty. She added that their department had received a proposal for a three-day seminar about six months ago, but the initiative was taken after approval from the VC's office.

"For the three-day workshop, we have a resource who has a good reputation at both the national and international levels, and our students will gain valuable knowledge and experience." We intend to continue such programmes in the future, and we are considering holding a joint exhibition of 'Music and Fine Art,' the modalities of which are currently being discussed”, Dr. Ruby Zutshi said.

Dr. Ruby Zutshi stated in her welcome speech that the workshop aims to enhance our students' professional competencies. With the active support of the KU administration, she claimed, the IMFA has produced renowned artists and is dedicated to succeeding at the national and international levels.

Sabreena Firdous, an IMFA student, expressed her happiness at participating in the programme and expressed her desire to deepen her knowledge of art. She added that since the event was new and such programmes should continue in the future.

“Given my current art education, the three-day training/workshop will be very beneficial to me. However, the university administration should continue holding training/workshops of this nature in the future for the benefit of the students”, she said.

At the event, IMFA faculty members Iftikhar Jafar and Naushad Hussain gave the vote of thanks and led the proceedings of the opening session, respectively. The Director of EMMRC and media advisor for KU Dr.Saleema Jan also shared the dais.
On the inaugural event of the three-day seminar/ workshop, a live performance by renowned actor Rajan Kumar, also known as Charlie Chaplin-II, enthralled the participants.
