Various studies about the rise of female foeticide underlines a grave concern. The phenomenon has shown a gradual increase in Kashmir Valley. Our society is fast shaping up on lines that could be disastrous for our future. At this point in time the alarm bells must ring and we should be all ears to it. If timely steps are not taken the situation can slip out of the hand posing a big threat to our coming generations. No society or religion can approve of this kind of inhuman practice. If parents feel that a girl child is an unmanageable burden there is something seriously wrong with our society. If human nature is any indicator no parents can think of killing their baby. Love and affection that nature has filled the hearts of parents with hardly allow of any such thoughts crossing the minds of parents. If in spite this parents undergo various tests to know before hand the sex of the foetus and go for abortion in case of female baby, it should prick our conscientious and make us question ourselves. It is the violation of the fundamentals of human civilization. As a Muslim society we are being repeatedly told that how our dear Prophet (PBUH) made Arabs stop the practice of burying a girl child alive. If we resort to same kind of behaviour towards girl child, we are worse than the Arabs of ignorant times. This is the time that we did some soul searching and tried to find out why it’s was happening. Once this question is attempted to answer it immediately comes to mind that the fault lies with the society’s behaviour towards the institution of marriage. Marriage of a girl has become a back crushing burden. Our folk expressions for this are painfully pertinent in this regard. The way we express the helplessness of the parents of a girl, and the way boys are advantageously placed in this case, explains it all. If a baby is aborted before she is born, we all are responsible for that. It is a murder to which we all contribute. So the prime task is to change the mind of society and make the process of marriage very easy. Besides, law enforcing agencies too should start getting active in this regard. Institutional measures, both in terms of letter and spirit, should make it difficult for anyone to think of female feticide.
