Eradicate dog menace

There has been a surge in the canine attacks in Srinagar and its adjacent areas. Few days ago at least 41 persons, including 9 tourists were bitten by stray dogs at Boulevard Road near Gagribal area of Dalgate Srinagar. The hospital reports suggest that there has been an unprecedented increase in the number of dog bite cases, over the years. The reports suggested in the last ten years the Srinagar and other parts of the Valley reported 58,000 dog bite cases. The reports also revealed that 4 to 5 thousand cases are being reported each year in GMC Srinagar while it has been seen that 15 to 20 dog biting cases are being documented per day in Srinagar and elsewhere in the valley. This is an alarming situation and if the issue isn’t addressed on priority it can become a major health concern. Already few human lives had lost to stray dogs in the past. Entire civil society of Kashmir has expressed its concern over the rising menace of stray dogs. Kashmir based newspapers are always full of stories about dog bites. Photographs of dogs crowded at different places, making it hell for pedestrians flash frequently on the pages of these newspapers. Large packs of dogs, usually near waste collection sites in the city is a common sight. The threat to human life is so visible that even a beast can turn sympathetic towards the people who hazard this threat day in day out. People have been raising the concern, rather they have been barking about it for quite some time. But it all seems to be falling on deaf ears. No denying the fact that every living being has a right to life. Killing animals for no reason cannot be justified, but here the question that needs to be addressed is how to save humans. If human life is threatened, everything else relegates to tertiary importance. It needs no extraordinary intelligence to make out that if dogs barge into civilian areas in numbers that pose danger to human life, what needs to be done. Human life has to be saved at any cost. What is the need to protect an animal which poses threat to human life? One is not questioning the right to life but when human life is at stake things like animal rights need either to be modified as per the requirement. Otherwise there would be dogs everywhere with no place for human beings.
