Baramulla, Mar30: An elderly woman was allegedly killed by her drug-addicted son in Dangerpora area of Sopore in Baramulla district on Wednesday night. The accused was arrested within hours of the crime.
According to a police official, the victim was strangled to death by her son. The body was shifted to the Sub District Hospital in Sopore for medico-legal formalities.
The accused’s elder brother revealed that his younger brother Showkat Ahmad had been detained by the police several times under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and had even undergone a 20-day rehabilitation program.
The victim’s son reportedly threw stones at his elder brother’s house at around 11:30 pm on Wednesday.
When the brother went to check on their mother, the accused pushed him back.
Suspicious, the brothers called their cousins and neighbors to help, and they eventually found the victim’s body under a wood plank.
Sopore Police said that a case has been registered in this case and investigations are ongoing.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shabir Nawab has stated that the killing was a result of the influence of drugs and that the accused has confessed to the crime.
“The culprit is a staunch drug addict, and this gruesome murder should be a lesson for all our youth,” Nawab added.
He said that this incident highlights the growing drug menace in the area and the need for more awareness campaigns to help people overcome drug addiction.
The incident has caused shock waves throughout the area, with residents calling for stringent action against drug addicts.
