Srinagar: The drug trade in Kashmir seems to have taken an aerial route as in a first-of-its-kind such incident the authorities have made a seizure of 7500 capsules of Spasmo-proxyvonat the Srinagar Airport. This has led the administration to go hard against the courier service agencies operating in the Union Territory.
The district administration of Srinagar has asked the courier service providers delivering the medical drugs to individuals to ensure proper address verification of recipients before handing over the consignment, as per the senior officials in the city administration, according to official sources.
Talking to Rising Kashmir, Deputy Drug Controller Kashmir NighatJabeen said they seized 7500 capsules of psychotropic substances during a surprise check at the Cargo facility at the Srinagar airport.
Since then, they have intensified the raids. “It was the first such seizure of Spasmo-proxyvon at the airport,” she said.
Jabeen said various reports have been received aboutthe trafficking of psychotropic substances through various Courier agencies for delivery to different parts of the Kashmir Division.
Further, the administration has begun the task to survey unauthorised or unregistered Courier Service providers operating in the summer capital.
It may be noted that over the years there has been mushrooming growth of courier service agencies in Kashmir valley.
Director Airport Kuldeep Singh told Rising Kashmir that the scanning and surveillance mechanism at the Srinagar airport has been strengthened.
“We do the screening and surveillance of cargo. Whatever we find suspicious we report it to the police,” he said.
Till date, the Drugs and Food Control Organisation have intensified the raids and large quantities of psychotropic and narcotic substances were seized.
The special wing of J&K Police, Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) has launched a major crackdown in Jammu and Kashmir in a coordinated manner to curb narcotics smuggling with the arrest of over 1232 drug peddlers and lodging of 867 FIRs.
The ANTF and J&K Police’s drive against drug peddling foiled many attempts of the inter-state drug peddlers with timely inputs provided by the intelligence agencies.
