The GeM is a form of one stop Government e-market place hosted by DGS&D, where common users of goods and service can procure. GeM is a dynamic, self-sustaining and user friendly portal for making procurement by Government Departments.
Major advantages of GeM for sellers are direct access to all Government Departments, One stop shop for bids / reverse auction on products / services, Dynamic pricing, Vendor rating system, new product suggestion facility for sellers, Seller friendly dashboard for selling and monitoring of supplies and payments, and regular new products categories on GeM.
The GeM ensures vendors get the timely payments from Departments against their supplies & services rendered.
As per General Financial Rules 2017, it is mandatory for all Government Departments to purchase products and services from GeM, thus making it a huge market for sellers & buyers.
The Departments can purchase directly on GeM upto Rs 25000, and above Rs 25000 to 5 lakh, L1 is to be considered. Above 5 lakh, bidding is mandatory on e portal. Under GeM, there is flexibility for sellers that they can make secondary users to look after GeM for them.

Policy mandates 25 percent procurement of goods and services from MSMEs, Tenders are free of cost, Purchase Preferences, etc. Vendors with UDYAM registration can get themselves directly registered on GeM.
