Hundreds of the students move out of Kashmir for quality higher studies and also to avoid frequent lockdown and shutdowns here.

However, many students from outside the J&K also make up their mind to get admission in Srinagar for one of the emerging subjects - Fashion Education here at National Institute of Fashion Technology Srinagar campus.

Surprisingly, the enrollment of the non-local students outnumber the locals.

Rising Kashmir interviewed one of the non-local students Ingrid James who joined NIFT Srinagar in 2017 and is enjoying every culture, hospitality, landscape. Barring political disturbances, she feels Kashmir is a best place for travellers.

Why did you choose Srinagar for fashion studies?

Kashmir is one of the best places in Asia which has breathtaking beauty and a fashion enthusiast like me needs a beautiful background to add wow factor to her style. Fashion is all about style and eye catching beauty which should appeal to viewers.

Having such a natural paradise is a blessing for pursuing photography, modelling, cinematography etc.

Have you confined yourself to campus only or you have explored the places here?

I'm trying to explore and use most of the beautiful places here as my background for modelling.

Here we get to see beauty in every season. One gets many opportunities for modelling. I don’t want to miss such an opportunity while launching my career in the fashion industry.

It is my last year here and I want to see all the beauty this place offers. Places like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Manasbal Lake, Margan top, Sonmarg, Gurez valley, Aru valley Drang, etc. are amazing places for fashion photography, fashion bloggers and filmmakers.

What is the strength of the local and non-local students at Srinagar Campus?

The strength of local students is very less, almost one fourth of the students from other states. NIFT Srinagar is trying to create awareness among local citizens of J&K and Ladakh to seek admissions in NIFT Srinagar in the fashion industry which has a promising career. There are many courses offered which have huge scope in today’s modern world.

Currently the institute offers four year course in fashion designing and fashion communications which include broad areas like Fashion Designing, Fashion Illustrator, Fashion Blogger, Set and Art Director, Brand Manager, Graphic Designer, Fashion Photographer, Event Manager, Animator, Fashion Stylist etc

You have been posting beautiful pictures on social media. Are you intending a career in modelling?

I'm doing fashion designing, modelling and artworks.  I don't want to restrict myself to one particular field. I would like to do whatever I'm loving. Maybe designing, modelling, artworks all together will be my future ambition and in that direction, a beautiful landscape is helping us a lot.

Due to frequent lockdowns and disturbances, it must be quite difficult to study here?

To be honest, it's quite a difficult situation here under such circumstances. However, people are accepting the NIFT culture. It's different yet amazing college life here. This place has been great, having so much craft to learn and to work on. People are also loving, warm and generous which shadows other negative things.

Travellers want peace not disturbance during their holidaying. Would you still recommend others to travel to Kashmir?

On the contrary, I found so much love and care here during my days of education and travelling. For a traveller, this place is good. A person receives so much care here even when they are total strangers. This place is quite different. Now things are bad around the world. One should not stop travelling. Even I would promote this place among female solo travellers also as this place carries no harm for visitors. If people are good, no harm is done to any traveller.Â
