M Haziq PanditSrinagar, Sep 27: The residents of Buchwara in the Dalgate area of Srinagar are facing severe hardships as the locality continues to grapple with an acute drinking water shortage. The crisis, which has been ongoing for over a month, has left many households without a reliable water supply, forcing them to rely on temporary alternatives.According to a delegation of residents, many families, especially those living near Masjid Sharief adjacent to Goodwill Public High School, have been without proper water supply for weeks. Locals say they depend on bore wells at nearby mosques and a temporary rubber pipeline connected to a tube well to meet their daily needs. While these measures provide some relief, they remain insufficient for daily consumption and household chores, leaving residents frustrated and worried about the long-term sustainability of such solutions. The shortage has disrupted daily routines, with families struggling to manage drinking water along with basic hygiene and cooking needs. “The situation has become unbearable,” said Hamad Wani, a resident. “Water is a basic necessity, and we have been left without it for over a month. Fetching water has become a daily struggle, and we have to plan our routines around it. It is physically and mentally exhausting.”Farooq Ahmad, another resident, added, "We have to rely on bore wells and rubber pipelines at nearby mosques, but they barely meet our daily needs. These makeshift arrangements are not sufficient for daily use, and we often run out of water before the day ends. It feels like a never-ending struggle. Relying on such temporary solutions is not sustainable.”The situation is particularly concerning for families with young children, elderly parents, and those with medical conditions. Shahid Mir, another local, said, “We have small children and elderly parents, yet no one seems to care about our plight.” Yaseen Qadri, another resident, added, “My mother has high blood pressure and needs to stay hydrated, but we are struggling to provide even that.”Residents are now urging the authorities to take immediate action to restore the water supply and implement a long-term solution. “We cannot continue to depend on temporary measures,” said Azhar Mir, a local resident. “Authorities must ensure a consistent water supply, as our daily lives and health are at stake.”Responding to these concerns, a senior official from the Jal Shakti Department (PHE), requesting anonymity, said the matter has been brought to their notice and necessary steps are underway. "We were not aware of the issue, but our teams will immediately inspect the locality and resolve the problem," the official said. He added that water tankers will be arranged to provide temporary relief. “These tankers will ensure residents have access to drinking water while the issue is being addressed.”
