Srinagar, July 16: The Indian National Congress (INC), is right now enormously busy in consultations with J&K leadership to choose a new president for the party in the Union Territory.
Sources told Rising Kashmir that senior Congress leader and former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is an “undisputed” choice of majority of leaders who wish him to lead the party ahead of assembly election.
A party insider disclosed that soon after Ghulam Ahmad Mir offered his resignation, the central level leadership had taken the matter seriously and initiated a process of consultations with local leadership about appointment of a new face in J&K.
He said the local Congress leaders have put forward their suggestions in meetings with Congress general secretary K C Venugopal and appraised him about the challenges the party is facing within J&K.
“The senior party leaders held meetings with Congress general secretary, K C Venugopal and forwarded their suggestions about a new face for the president post,” a party insider said.
Mir offered his resignation last week to the party high command and paved the way for a new appointment ahead of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
“I have offered resignation to the party high command. Whatever they will decide I will, however, respect their decision,” Mir had said.
The party insider while continuing said the appointment of new president for JK Congress will likely take some time as top brass of the party is extensively busy in choosing able leadership to the party in J&K.
“We did our job. It is up to the party high command to act on our suggestions and appoint a suitable leadership to J&K,” the party insider said.
Another senior leader of the party while speaking to Rising Kashmir said during consultations with party high command, two opinions came forward upon which party leadership is working on.
He said during meetings with Congress General Secretary, K C Venugopal several leaders suggested the name of senior party leader and former J&K Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad while as many suggested let there be continuation of the existing president till elections are held.
“When party high command initiated the process of consultations with us, there were two opinions which came to the fore. Some sought change in the party and suggested former CM J&K Ghulam Nabi Azad’s name to lead the party. This was the consensus of meetings held between party high command and JK leaders,” the party leader said.
Few leaders came in support of Mir and requested party high command that as JK is heading towards elections Mir should be allowed to continue to lead the party, he said.
The sources said the Congress general secretary, K C Venugopal listened to each and every invitee from J&K and assured them a new face for the party in JK will be appointed soon.
“The consultations are still underway. The leadership is working on our suggestions and a decision will be arrived at soon,” a party leader told Rising Kashmir.
He said the central high command wants JK Unit to be united at this point of time as UT is heading towards assembly elections.
“The party’s central level leadership is much worried about the JK Congress and it wants the local Congress much stronger in the wake of elections,” he said.
The reports said the Congress high command wants better functioning of JK Congress right now and is worried about upcoming elections as any mistrust within the party cadres will benefit other parties.
