University of Kashmir:
The University of Kashmir established the Directorate of Distance Education in 1976 to impart education in different disciplines through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.
The Directorate of Distance Education has been offering many academic courses/programs and undertakes a diverse range of activities.
The directorate is housed in a multi-storied building with a well-equipped library, excellent student support services, an audio-visual lab, a conference hall, well-furnished classrooms, and a computer lab with the latest Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities.
The varsity offers a Bachelor of Education (B.ED)—a two-year academic course and a Diploma in Pre-Primary Teachers Training (DPPTT)—a one-year academic course.
Central University of Kashmir:
The Central University of Kashmir opened the School of Education in 2011 which started functioning from the academic session of June-2012.
The School of Education offers M.A. Education, B.Ed., M.Ed., Integrated B.Ed., M.Ed. (3Years), M.P.Ed., M. Phil., PhD and P.G. Diploma in Guidance and Counselling (PGDGC) programs.
Keeping in view the vision and mission of CUK, the School of Education has successfully taken many initiatives and innovative steps to realize the achievement of the goal of excellence in education.
Cluster University of Srinagar:
Cluster University of Srinagar (CUS), a State University established under ‘The Srinagar and Jammu Cluster Universities Act, 2016’ offers M.A and M.Ed courses at the PG level.
The varsity offers an array of courses in various fields like 5 years integrated programs such as B.Ed-M.Ed. Admission to these courses is done based on merit in the screening.
CUS has 5 constituent colleges namely Amar Singh College, Sri Pratap College, and Govt. College for Women, M. A. Road, Govt. Degree College, Bemina and Govt. College of Education in its close vicinity.
IGNOU Regional Centre Srinagar was established in 1999 to provide higher education to the masses of Kashmir Division including Leh and Kargil.
Regional Centre started its functioning from the campus of the University of Kashmir with jurisdiction over the valley of Kashmir and the districts of Kargil.
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Regional Centre Srinagar offers a wide range of courses to prepare teacher educators and educational administrators to develop a national and global vision.
The varsity offers Foundation Course on Education of Children with Disabilities (FCCD), Masters Education (MADE), Masters of Arts (M.A), Masters of Education (M.ED), Bachelor of Education (B.ED), post-graduation in Adult Education, Post Graduate Diploma in Distance Education (PGDDE), Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education (PGDHE), Diploma in Early childhood care and Education (DECE), Certificate in Maternal and Child Care (CMCC) and Certificate in Nutrition Child Care (CNCC).
IGNOU, Regional Centre Srinagar has so far trained 20,000 government teachers through the BED program of IGNOU. It has established study centres in almost every district of Kashmir valley. Notably, IFNOU has also established one special study centre in Central Jail Srinagar for jail inmates. The centre has produced gold medallists from the last eight convocations of IGNOU.
Delhi Teacher University (DTU):
In March of this year, the Delhi government launched Delhi Teacher University (DTU) to offer courses for students to become teachers. This is Delhi's first of its kind university that aims to prepare well-trained and highly qualified teachers.
The University will offer a new-age integrated teacher education program after Class 12. It will also emphasize fundamental and applied research in education by collaborating with national and international organizations.
Apart from offering BEd, MEd, PhD, and certificate programmes, the university will offer training courses for teachers in-service and those who have graduated and looking to be upskilled.
The university will also have national and international collaboration for the exchange of ideas and practice along with partnerships with schools to give hands-on experience.
The Delhi Assembly in January passed a bill for setting up a world-class teachers' training university. The campus is located in Outram Lane in the Mukherjee Nagar area of the national capital.
Along with this, a unique cell will also be set up at Delhi Teachers University which will visit schools in Delhi and motivate students to opt for the teaching profession.
This is the reason why IITs were established in the country in 1951, premium institutes like IIMs and AIIMS started decades ago but to date, no teacher university of this level has been started in the country.
The DTU will work to bridge this gap and emerge as a brand in the field of teacher education not only in India but all over the world.
Across Indian states it is common in families that if a child is good at mathematics, then parents encourage them to prepare for IIT, if a child is better in history, then they will be asked to prepare for UPSC. But children are never encouraged to become teachers.
M.Ed, NET, SET for teaching higher class:
To be a school teacher B.Ed qualification is sufficient. But students who want to teach in postgraduate colleges need an M.Ed qualification. But it will be better if they clear the NET and SET exams. It is necessary to have a qualified NET or SET exam to get a job in college. They must have completed a master’s degree in their respective disciplines to be eligible for the NET test.

Now, teachers have started choosing different teaching profiles like Education Consultant, Curriculum Developer, Career Counselor and Virtual Instructor leaving that classroom environment behind.
The role of the teacher is changing so fast that pre-service or in-service teacher education cannot probably cope with expectations of the society.
A specialised kind of training is required for dealing intelligently with children enrolled at the pre-primary level. In the course of the past few years, pre-primary education has assumed tremendous significance all over the country.
The Indian Education Commission recommends that the staff of the nursery should be trained as per the principles of Child Psychology.
Several such institutes are already in existence but their number is very meagre. Teachers' training programs should aim at helping the trainees to develop positive self-confidence and professional identity to provide an environment where a child will feel happy and secure so that overall development takes place in the right perspective.
