Baramulla youth Danish brings laurels to JK with Taekwondo skills

Earlier this week, international Taekwondo player from the valley Danish Manzoor was awarded as “Best Male Athlete of the tournament in the Tokey Memorial Open Taekwondo Championship 2021 at Punjab.

The tournament commenced on April 10 and concluded on April 13.

Hailing from Gulshan Abad Colony, north Kashmir's Baramulla district , 23-year- youth has brought many laurels to the valley even in the past .

Currently pursuing Bachelors degree from Government Degree College Baramulla, Danish was inspired to martial arts after watching Chinese movies. Various martial art forms would blow his mind and finally, in 2013 he decided to learn the art.

After learning the art, he participated in many tournaments where he won many medals. This increased his passion for martial arts and it motivated him to learn sophisticated martial art techniques. And so he learnt.

After that he represented Atul International Taekwondo Academy and JK in a martial art tournament, where he made it to finals and bagged a silver medal for J&K. 

So far, in his eight years of taekwondo career, Danish has won 20 gold medals, four silver and two bronze medals in various district, state , national and international level tournaments.

He has also qualified among top 20 athletes across the world in the first ever International Online European Taekwondo Poomsae Championship 2020.

Danish also participated in the 2nd India Open International Olympic Ranking Taekwondo Championship held at Hyderabad in 2019.

He was recommended by J&K Taekwondo Association as a potential athlete to participate in the first ever Olympic level camp which was held under-the world’s number one Olympic level coach Paul Green of Great Britain at Khel Gaon, Ranchi.

He bagged a gold medal at North India National Taekwondo Championship  Chandigarh (2018).

Danish is first from JK who participated in Asian Indoor Games trials which was held at Sports Authority of India campus Aurangabad (SAI). He is the first from the valley who got a selection letter from India’s first ever professional taekwondo academy, “Peace Taekwondo Academy” for the Olympic level training program.

The martial art player is the first from the state who participated in national league event “Champions league season 2” at Haryana and secured silver medal for the state, has won silver in Mahaveer Open National Federation Championship, Senior Silver medalist at Jaipur (2016).

He is the two times gold medalist in North India Taekwondo Championships (2011 and 2018). 

In Gulmarg Taekwondo festival he earned a gold medal (2014).

Moreover, he won two times consecutively gold medalist Open Kashmir Championships (2013 and 2014)

Danish is also four times gold medalist and two times bronze medalist in State Taekwondo Championship in 2012, 2013, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2018.

Danish credits his wins to his coach Master Atul Pangotra (International Coach) and thanks President, JKTA, D.N.Pangotra, Vice President JKTA, Nissar Husain, General Secretary JKTA ,Jagjit Singh, and other officials for their support.

"Taekwondo is an Olympic sport, but unfortunately we were lacking the support from the government initially. But now the Sports Council has initiated and arranged an advance based Taekwondo training camp under the guidance of Atul Pangotra," he said.

Danish says, Kashmir has a great talent in terms of sports but the government needs to properly look and channelize it.

" My message would be only to focus on your goals before it's too late. Parents should introspect whether the game is valid or not, before their wards choose any category of game," he suggests.
