At WHL-181 seminar, speakers call for breaking silence on violence against women

Pulwama, Nov 5: Jammu and Kashmir Women's Helpline (WHL-181) organized a seminar on the elimination of violence against women and girls at Government Degree College Women Pulwama which was attended by a large number of students and staff.
On the occasion, Principal of the college, Dr Yasmeen Farooq exhorted the students to break their silence on domestic violence and utilize the Centrally-sponsored schemes of the Department of Social Welfare.
The WHL-181 is a project of the Union Ministry of Women & Child Development and is being run by the Mission Directorate Women Empowerment of the Department of Social Welfare in UT of J&K.
Campaigner-cum-project coordinator WHL-181 Bilal Bhat highlighted the overall services provided by the helpline. Giving details, he said the helpline provides 24-hour immediate response to women in distress and represents them before the appropriate service providers such as police and legal authorities. He said the One-Stop Centre also provides services like hospital assistance, emergency response and psychological support/counselling, temporary shelter, family counselling etc.
Bhat further informed the participants that they can get help from the helpline in case of domestic violence, dowry abuse, mental torture, sexual assault, eve-teasing, cyber-crime, child sexual abuse, rape, economical violence or any other violence.
While stating that “suicide is not a solution”, the project coordinator said the purpose of OneS-Stop Centres is to provide integrated services to women and children affected by domestic violence, sexual harassment, and emotional and psychological abuse.
The programme was hosted by Dr Satindar Singh. Prof. Saima Syed, Dr Asma Syed, Dr Atif Ashraf Wani, Ajaz Rasool and other faculty members attended the seminar which concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Asma Syed.
