Parents and Drugs: Talk To Your Children

Loving your child doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stop him/ her from doing evil things

  • Nowadays, children prefer drugs over playing or enjoying with friends
  • Parents must think what messages do their actions send to their child
  • Parents should avoid their children from those video games, TV programs and movies that glamorize tobacco, alcohol, and drugs<

Along with love and care, it is the responsibility of parents to protect their children from every evil. Presently, there are numerous evils present in our society like pornography, vituperation, misbehave of younger generation towards elders and many other things but the increase in abuse of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs in young generation is a matter of concern. Nowadays, children prefer drugs over playing and enjoying or friends. Drug abuse is the root cause of several problems that our society is facing today. Increase in suicide and rape cases are also the fruits of drug abuse.

Secret agencies are spreading drugs everywhere and spoiling the future of our youngsters. Their dignity and health is in danger. So parents should come forward to protect the future of their children by preventing them from drug abuse. Below are some measures parents should do to save their children:

Be a role model

There is a proverb in Kashmir, “kokir tachan ti puet hechan”, meaning ‘the young ones imitate parents’ as parents are kids’ first and foremost influence. Children notice how parents use alcohol, tobacco, and drugs at home, in their social life, business life, and in other relationships. This also includes how parents deal with strong feelings, emotions, stress, and even minor pains. Parents must think what messages do their actions send to their child.

Correction of belief

“Everybody drinks” is a wrong concept by which many youngsters become drug addict. It’s the responsibility of parents to correct this belief. They must tell their child that “everybody” is not always right. Instead of looking at majority we should always follow right path, no matter it is followed by some people are a large number of people.

Educate children about harmful effects of drugs

Many children are not aware about the ill effects of drug abuse. They consider it as a normal activity. So parents must educate their children about the negative effects of alcohol and drugs along with its effects on their ability to learn or play sports. Parents can also give example of that person whose life is now meaningless and destroyed because of drug addiction, this would also help in preventing them from drug abuse.

There are various diseases that are caused by consumption of alcohol, like Cirrhosis of Liver is the most well known alcohol associated disease. Eczema, Alopecia, Nail Dystrophy, Paronychia and Angular Stomatitis are also common diseases among alcoholics.

Some restrictions

Parents should avoid their children from those video games, TV programs and movies that glamorize tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Sometimes, you have to be tough with your children. They need to know what the boundaries are and when it is appropriate to renegotiate those boundaries as they mature. Loving your child doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stop him/ her from doing evil things, loving your child is you should care about his/her future, health, and dignity.

Notice activities

Parents must notice activities of their children like why they are late, what type of friends they are having, where they are investing money etc. It is also important to understand from where teens obtain drugs. They can obtain drugs just about anywhere they like to hang out, including school and playground. This will help parents to recognise whether their children are involved in drug abuse or not.

How to deal with problems

Some children prefer drugs because of depression and anxiety. Parents should teach their children how strong persons deal with problems in their lives. Taking drugs is not the solution of problems but it creates many more problems for the one who is a drug addict. Parents should give them some good books to read, some work, or any other activity which will act as an alternative for them to deal with problems.

Moral and religious education

Parents also should teach moral and religious education to their young ones. When a child is morally developed he/she will never do such things that can be harmful for them. Similarly, religious education can also play a vital role in preventing the children from drug abuse as every religion teaches us that “health is wealth”. Major religions like Islam and Christianity also condemn these things.

The Glorious Qur’an prohibits the consumption of alcohol in the following verse: “O ye who believe! Intoxicants and Gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an Abomination – of Satan’s handiwork; eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper,” [Al-Qur’an 5:90].

The Bible prohibits the consumption of alcohol in the following verses: a. “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise,” [Proverbs 20:1]. B) “And be not drunk with wine,” [Ephesians 5:18]. So, a religious child will never harm his/her health.

Getting help

If the condition of child is serious do not wait to see if they stop. The first step to getting help is talking to teens about it; talk honestly with your child about healthy choices and risky behaviors. Listen to what your child has to say. Make talking and listening a habit. Seek medical advice also. You can start with your family doctor, or you can schedule an appointment at a local mental health center. With the help of mental health professional, parents can determine whether the problem is serious enough for immediate treatment.
