Human mind is a very powerful organ in the body. It’s the ultimate controlling centre of the entire body. It’s also the body part where - feelings and emotions emanate from. If it gets disturbed, whole body seems unfit. If it’s not looked upon very well, it can badly affect our day to day life and even our physical body starts deteriorating.

Broadly speaking, our body is made up of two health systems. One is physical health and the other is mental health. Most of us are familiar only with the former one and not with the latter one. Taking care of our mental health is however as much important as is having a well built physique. Just like we care for our physical body we must also maintain a sound mental well being.

According to World Health Organization, “Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

Like our physical body is subject to a plethora of harmful and toxic agents, our mind is similarly exposed to a great number of negative and irrational thoughts. These thoughts are produced by different circumstances such as poverty, job insecurity, calamities or other tragic incidents. Each and every one of us experiences such thoughts.

Coming of these thoughts doesn’t mean that our mental state is amiss. However, when we harbor and give them due attention is where we let our mind go out of control. If not managed immediately, the gradual accumulation of such thoughts and feelings lays the foundation of a perturbed mind.

A person may begin to experience several mental issues which can manifest in the form of depression, excessive worry or anxiety disorders. Of all mental disorders, depression is the most common.

Globally, more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression. At its worst, it can lead the person to suicide. As per WHO report, around 8,00,000 people die every year, due to suicide menace. It is surprising to know that it is not their physical body that induces them to go for suicide, but their depressed and anxious mind.

It is okay, in fact normal to worry over your problems-related to health, job, family and society. There is nothing wrong to feel and share such problems. Every individual faces problems in the life, and to upkeep one’s mental attitude throughout such conditions is determined by how one responds to those problems.

In today’s world, which is fraught with stressful and hectic life, looking upon our mental state is of paramount importance. Below are given some tips that have been proved helpful in keeping your mind healthy and sound:

Accept the mental problem you are suffering from: Whether it is anxiety, worry or depression. Remember by mere acceptance of your mental state, you are somehow lessening the effect of that state. Moreover, sound mental health never means that you should be devoid of any mental distress.

Try not to sit alone: By it I don’t mean that one should not enjoy solitude but that one should not sit idle and permit the negative thoughts and bad feelings to occupy the mind. Keep yourself busy so as to not let mood swings and anxiety creep in.

Spend time with your family members: Go and relish the time with your parents and siblings. Discuss and talk with them, help the mother in her daily chores, and revive that defunct family bond that is broken now. Pay visit to your friends and relatives as well. This serves two purposes, your bond with them is strengthened and it will also remove the burden of disturbed mind.

Cut out your social media time: Minimize the time you spend on social media. Use it wisely and only when needed. Avoid unnecessary scrolling. Seeing all day those tragic, grievous and woeful accidents and news on the social media can give discomfort to your mind.

Enjoy your favorite hobby: Hobby is considered to be one of the best stress busters. Our life is nowadays so much busy that we have little, if any time, for our hobbies. Cut your social media time and use it in your hobby- which can be gardening, writing, or simply a slow walk in the nature.

Share your emotions: There is nobody in the world who doesn’t experience such mental problems. Every one of us suffers from mental disturbances at some stage of our life. Share your feelings and problems with others. It will palliate your worried mind.

Stay active by doing exercises: Whatever exercise you like, do it. Regular exercise is good for your physical and emotional health. It relaxes you and provide immediate relieve from anxiety and stress.

Prayer: Prayer is thought to be the best medicine to do away with anxiety and other mental problems. Once you start performing it with a conscious and calm heart, you will reap the benefits of prayer vis-à-vis anxiety. It will give you soothing, peaceful and tranquil body.
