Srinagar, July 12: The Amarnath Yatra resumed on Tuesday from Baltal side of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district after remaining suspended for four days due to massive cloudburst that hit the lower reaches of holy cave killing 16 yatries and injuring more than 40, officials said.

The officials said the pilgrims were allowed from Baltal base camp during the wee hours of Tuesday after administration cleared the road leading to the holy cave. They said the devotees started their foot Yatra at 03:00 am in the morning.

“The Yatra resumed from both Panchtarni and Baltal axis on July 12, 2022 after which thousands of pilgrims reached the holy cave for darshan,” the officials said.

The July 8 cloudburst led to the death of 16 pilgrims and more than 40 Yatries were found missing after a cloudburst had hit lower reaches of Amarnath cave in Baltal area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. The officials had said the cloudburst took place around 05:30 pm triggering flash floods in the area. The devastation washed away several langers and tents erected for the convenience of the pilgrims.

As per the officials the search operation for missing Yatries is still underway and was enhanced after the road blocks en-route were cleared by police, army, ITBP, NDRF, SDRF, IAF, civil administration and other associated agencies. The care taking body Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB) did not share any data about missing persons so far whether they have been traced out or not.

The officials said the rescue operation is being carried out tirelessly at the flash flood site as well as the river flowing from Amarnath cave to Baltal base camp. However they added there are thin chances of finding any survivor.

More than 40 people are feared to be missing and trapped under the debris that came along with the flash floods in the area.

Meanwhile, 7,107 pilgrims left Baghwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on Tuesday and travelled to twin routes of Baltal and Pahalgam.

The administration has made adequate arrangements for the convenience of Yatries.
