Kupwara, July21: The patients of north Kashmir’s Handwara have no option left else to move to periphery hospitals as the district hospital has yet to fill 59 vacant key posts.
As per documents available with the Rising Kashmir, the DH Handwara has total staff strength of 149 employees which include doctors, paramedics, administrative manpower, etc. However, there are 59 posts vacant yet to be filled by the administration.
The documents reveal that there among 90 filled vacancies 10 doctors in the hospital have been attached to different valley hospitals, resulting in huge inconvenience to patient care services in the medical facility.
The documents also reveal the vacant posts as Medical Officer (12), Senior Consultant Surgery (1), Senior Consultant Medicine (1), Consultant Gynae (1), Consultant Anesthetist (2), Consultant Ortho (2), Consultant Pathology (1), Nursing Supervisor (1), Super Pharmacist (1), Head Theater Technician (1), Super Theater Assistant (1), Junior Theater Assistant (1), Junior Anesthesia Assistant (4), Senior Lab Technician (1), Junior Lab Technician (1), Head Dental Technician (1), Sr. Dental Technician (1), Sr. X-ray technician (1), Jr. Nurses (11) and others.
“Considering the sensitivity of the hospital into account, the administration should have thirsted upon augmenting the said hospital with required services. But it shocks the local population to see an undue delay in filling the vacancies”, the local told Rising Kashmir.
They said medical officers at any healthcare facility are being considered as the “backbone” of the center, while the said hospital is deprived of the facility and thus patient care has been put at risk.
“This hospital caters large chunk of the population from far-off places of the district. Sometimes it receives sea of patients in a day, resulting in jam-packed OPDs among them much return without consultations owing to less number of concern doctors available at the hospital”, the locals told.
It is worth mentioning that among existing medical officers, two of them have been already attached to JLNM, Rainawari, DH Shopian, and SDH Kupwara, etc, resulting in a further hit to patient care at the hospital.
Also, among two dental surgeons, one who is said to be the son of a former J&K Minister is attached to MLA Hostel Srinagar for a very long time.
As per documents, the super dental technician in the hospital is also attached to PHC Chogul, Handwara. Also, Head Optholmology Assistant has been attached to SDH Kupwara, resulting in a mess in the patient care at the hospital.
A senior doctor at the hospital told Rising Kashmir that the health center is performing around 200 surgeries per month. He said the only Anesthetist is bearing all the burden of surgeries at the hospital while in his absence or during mid-night emergencies, the patients are being moved to other hospitals.
He added in absence of due medical staff, the hospital is getting help from ISM doctors who are not authorized to prescribe or consult patients.
The locals however appealed to LG led administration to take effective measures in filling the vacant posts at the hospital and ensure good patient care services at the hospital.
