Srinagar, Nov 11:In a tragic incident at Srinagar's iconic Dal Lake, three Bangladeshi tourists lost their lives, and five houseboats were reduced to ashes in a massive fire that broke out early Saturday morning. The blaze is believed to have originated from the Safeena houseboat at Ghat number 9, quickly spreading to engulf four adjacent houseboats, leaving a trail of destruction.
Eyewitnesses reported the swift response of residents who initiated a large-scale rescue operation. Fire and emergency department officials joined the efforts, but it took considerable time to bring the fire under control. Despite the collaborative response, five houseboats and numerous structures were consumed by the flames.
The distress call was received by the Fire and Emergency Department at approximately 5:17 AM, leading to a prompt and intensive response. The fire was eventually contained after hours of efforts. However, the recovery of the remains of the three Bangladeshi tourists—identified as Anindaya Kowshal, Das Gupta, and Mohammad Moinud—occurred later in the afternoon following debris clearance by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Eight persons were rescued through the coordinated efforts of Srinagar Police, SDRF, Tourist Police, Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES), and civilians. An investigation into the incident has been initiated, with a report filed at PS RM Bagh.
The Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar, accompanied by officials from the Tourism Department, visited the site to assess the aftermath of the devastating blaze. They assured houseboat owners that the reconstruction issue would be prioritized, and a special committee would be formed to expedite the process, addressing both the rebuilding of houseboats and the provision of adequate timber.
Officials from the Directorate of Tourism also visited the site, reaffirming their commitment to fast-tracking the rebuilding process and ensuring necessary resources for reconstruction. Meanwhile, the police are actively investigating the cause of the fire, as fire and emergency officials confirmed the tragic demise of the three Bangladeshi tourists.
