Work in two shifts to complete Smart City Projects: CEO to contractors

39 projects completed, work on 34 projects going on: Officials

Srinagar, July 15:  To quicken the completion of smart city projects, Athar Amir Khan, CEO of the project and SMC commissioner, has impressed upon the contractors to work at least two shifts everyday.
The work on this project began in 2017 and was launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) GoI in which 100 cities were selected for urban renewal and retrofitting.
The prestigious projects was launched under the Mission aimed at driving economic growth and improving the quality of life of people, both the capital cities of Jammu and Kashmir were selected by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
These projects include an integrated Command and Control Centre, e-services, smart classrooms, smart toilets, smart meters, wifi zones, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCDA), geographic information system (GIS) for mapping assets, Intelligent Traffic Management system (ITMS), green spaces, vertical gardens, and heritage conservation, etc.
 
Divulging the details, an official said that some 39 projects have been completed under this prestigious project while work on 34 projects is underway. In addition, there are 64 projects coming.
The official said the completed projects under this prestigious project are: Development of Pathways/Kiosks along Jhelum Bund; Beautification along Jhelum Bund; Revetment and Embankments along River Banks; Improvement of Ghats along Jhelum; Area Illumination along River Banks; Pedestrian Walkways and Footpaths; boardwalks, walkways and cycle tracks (ChountheKoulle – Behind J &KBankHdqtrs); Illumination of Bridges-City Beautification; Upgradation of Historical Markets Phase I (Maharaj Gunj) and several other projects have been completed.
According to Srinagar residents, the projects are not visible yet and Srinagar city looks no different from what it used to be before. The much-hyped project was initiated by the Ministry of Urban Development and Government. 
There is nothing smart about Srinagar. It continues to remain underdeveloped. Apart from a concrete flyover, nothing much has changed. In winter, the city gets enveloped in a chilling dark atmosphere.
"We live in the city; still it doesn't look like any big city after dark. Our city can’t match with other cities in the country as many parts get plunged into darkness after evening every day. " 
They said that the city has many lakes and streams in the area, but a 24-hour portable water supply is still a dream for many areas. 
According to a senior official of the project, the CEO of Smart City Project Srinagar, Athar Amir Khan, has recently taken a detailed review of the projects, which was followed by site visits to various project sites including the Traditional Souq Market at Batmaloo, BatmalooMominabad Road, Batmaloo, Qamarwari Road. Polo view market. Residency Road, M.A. Road, grade separator, TRC, Sonawar wall paintings, Gupkar junction, road improvement, and a few other projects.
 
The CEO emphasized the need to expedite the completion of the projects in a compressed timeframe for which the contractor would have to work at least two shifts daily.
The CEO also directed that quality standards be followed and that the works bear the stamp of quality and meticulous planning that went into the projects' conception.
The projects being implemented by the Srinagar Smart City Limited, both by itself and in collaboration with other departments like Rand B, Irrigation and Flood Control, P.H.E., S.M.C, Tourism, etc, have the potential to transform the city into a vibrant and modern city with upgraded and resilient infrastructure.
The C.E.O was accompanied by the Chief Engineer of Smart City, the General Manager of Planning, and officers of SSCL and SMC. The CEO has directed that such site visits shall be a regular feature of the project implementation for on-the-spot assessment and efficient decision-making with regard to the projects in execution.
