Mammography is the X-ray of breasts. It is usually done for evaluation of lumps or pain in the breasts. In western countries mammography is also done as a screening tool, which means the women who have no symptoms also undergo mammography. The aim of screening is to catch the cancer at very early stage when treatment is more likely to be successful.
Nowadays, in addition to X-ray mammography, high resolution ultrasound and MRI is also available which aid in establishing the diagnosis.
Anyone going for mammography should discuss with her doctor and provide them with all the past medical history like surgery or cosmetic procedure as these are known to interfere with the diagnosis on the Mammography.
A positive mammogram does not always mean cancer and can be due to benign tumors or cysts. In these situations further tests like biopsy may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. Remember, it is always important to discuss with your doctor before going for any medical test.
