We Swallow a Lot !

 . Once a minute.

.600- 1000 times a day.
      - 350 times while awake.
      - 200 times while eating.
       - 50 times while asleep.
.300,000 times a year.
 
Normal swallowing is a complex voluntary and involuntary  function  which involves swallowing centre in brain stem ,5 cranial nerves,
2 cervical nerves and 26 muscles ,
 
Difficulty in swallowing ( Dysphagia) can present with any problem in the eating process from the oral cavity to distal oesophagus ( food pipe ).
 
SIGNS OF CONCERN  in patients with Dysphagia include:
Weight loss.
Dysphonia( change in voice)
Coughing during eating
Nasal emission of liquids
Prolonged meal time
Multiple swallows per bolus.
 
Wet voice
 
EVALUATION: 
Clinical.
Video Fluroscopic Swallow study
Upper GI endoscopy
Functional Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing(FEES).
