Srinagar, July 30: To revive crochet and knitting, two Srinagar girls have started their online store to keep the old tradition alive.
Omaira and Benish started the “Craft World Kashmir”- an online store of crochet booties, bags, suits, key chains, knitted winter clothing, crochet rubber bands, wall hangings, and bridal sets.
They started this online store using Facebook and Instagram pages and their business is growing by each day.
" We are reviving the old tradition of knitted clothing and crochet products. We give our traditional knitted and crochet products a modern touch. Our customers are from all over the world. They love our products," they said.
Currently, they have 16 employees working with them.
“Fortunately, we did not need to invest a huge amount in our new venture in the beginning. With the help of our well-wishers, we simply displayed our creative designs of traditional crochet or Koeraishi products on our online pages,” said Omaira.
After getting a good response from online mediums, the talented pair started receiving orders from different places across India.
“We have received orders from Bangalore, Delhi, Jammu, Mumbai and other states and countries. We managed a good network of clients within a few months of starting my business while only working part-time,” said the duo.
After passing the Post-graduation in Sociology from IGNOU. Both the friends worked in a private school for some time.
Not so happy with the job, the pair turned their hobby of “Art and Craft” into a successful venture.
They order raw material from outside as they are facing trouble in getting the colours and material here as per the requirement.
“We were worried about the material. Initially, I was very nervous and thought my customers would disappear after the first purchase,” said Beenish.
The duo created different unique and traditional designs and reached as many people as possible at an affordable price.
“We treat our customers with respect and make it easy for them to order the product. We use quality material. Our products are very creative and unique,” said Omaira.
They initially knit wool or other material with the help of a special needle or technique called Crochet.
But now they have added handmade crochet jewellery which is most trending in Kashmir.
“This jewellery is mostly seen in Pakistan. For the first time, we have introduced such floral jewellery designs for the brides here and we are getting a sound response and orders,” she said.
Earlier, knitted and crochet designs were mostly seen in every home. The women folk used to knit different clothes and other useful items. But, through the efforts of these young girls, crochet designing has staged a comeback in Kashmir with unique and creative designs.
Both the girls have learnt the beautiful traditional art from Youtube. They work together on designing the products and later distribute their work.
“Both Youtube and the internet helped us. We have learnt most of the designs from Youtube but we add more creativity to increase the aesthetics of our products, said Beenish.
