Srinagar, June 23: Putting his life on the line, a houseboat owner rescued seven tourists in Dal Lake here who were trapped after their houseboat sank due to the continuous rains on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
Shoda realised his houseboat was slowly sinking into the Dal Lake.He cried for help.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, he said that he woke up in the night to check the water levels.
At first, he couldnot believe water was getting into his houseboat. Soon after realisingthat the houseboat was sinking, the first thing he did was that he rushed toward the tourists who were staying in the next bedroom.
“Not only me, but even my family members also joined me in saving the tourists and their stuff from drowning and we managed to shuffle them to a safe destination,” Shoda said.
Shoda claimed that his houseboat was old and he tried several times to renovate the houseboat but the authorities denied him to fix it.
Shoda now appeals to the authorities to permit him the renovation of his sunken houseboat and asks for compensation for his losses.
According to Shoda, it will take him almost 25 lakh rupees to repair the houseboat, but he is clueless about where from he will arrange such an amount. He added that none of the officials from the administration had visited him until Thursday evening.
He went on to say that the houseboat owners in Dal Lake have suffered badly due to the COVID-19 back-to-back waves. "None of the tourists were visiting these houseboats due to restrictions."
“As life came back on track, I was expecting a good flow of tourists here at the houseboat, but the intervening night shattered all my dreams,” he said.
The affected family has urged the authorities to provide them assistance, so that they can restore the houseboat again.
