Srinagar boy Ibrahim Qureshi wins J&K Badminton Championship

Jammu, March 25: 16-year-old Srinagar boy Ibrahim Qureshi has brought laurels to the valley by winning the champions title in the u-17 age category in the 48th Jammu and Kashmir (UT) Badminton championship held at M.A. indoor Stadium Jammu.
Ibrahim, the Badminton sensation of Kashmir achieved this feat by defeating his opponent Abhijeet Jasrotia of Kuthwa in the final match in three sets by scoring 21:15,16: 21, 21:18.
The badminton championship started on March 20 and concluded on March 23 2022.
Ibrahim, who hails from the Amira Kadal area in Srinagar district started playing badminton at the age of 6. He has become the first player from Kashmir, who has won eight state championships in different age categories consecutively from the past five years.
He is also the first player from Kashmir who was ranked 18th in India in 2021. He is also receiving a scholarship from HCL India for the last two years after winning the National final at Lucknow.
Ibrahim also played in the U19 category in the event but in the semifinals, he got retired hurt after twisting his ankle in a crucial match against another top player of state in the U19 age category.
While talking to Rising Kashmir, Ibrahim Qurashi said winning a state championship is really a great feeling for him.
“To emerge as a state champion among hundreds of participants who came from different top coaching academies of country is a wonderful feeling, and proud moment for me” he said.
Ibrahim said that sports authorities must make Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor stadium functional immediately so that players can practice and prepare for other major events which is closed for renovation purposes since 2019.
“I am appealing to LG, J&K Manoj Sinha for making at least one Sports Authority India level coach available for the region for the badminton players of Kashmir, he said.
