Srinagar, Aug. 23: The second phase of the installation of street lights in the city has begun and around forty thousand street lights will be installed in the said phase, among them ten thousand lights installed so far, an SMC official said on Monday.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Commissioner of Srinagar Municipal Corporation Athar Amir Khan said the second phase of the installation of street lights has started recently. In this phase, all the vital places, including the main roads, will be given priority.
The commissioner said we have also installed around ten thousand street lights so far.
It is pertinent to mention here that SMC has installed 60 thousand street lights in several parts of Srinagar city. However, officials assured that the remaining areas will be covered in phase 2, which will include the procurement and installation of over 40 thousand street lights.
Numerous localities voiced dissatisfaction with the excessive delay in installing street lights in their areas and complained about either having no or defunct street lights.
They claimed that when the sun sets, complete darkness envelops these areas. “People, particularly the elderly and children, find it difficult to venture out in the dark hours,”said Danish Ahmad, a Batmaloo resident.
