Hysterectomy (surgical removal of uterus) is sometimes necessary to treat certain medical conditions, but nowadays more uteruses can be saved than previously.
Fibroids and excessive menstrual bleeding is a common problem and earlier the only treatment option was surgery. However newer technological advancements have made it possible to save uterus in certain patients and treat fibroid through angiography (called Uterine Fibroid Embolisation - UFE). Medicines are injected only into the blood vessels supplying the uterus. The fibroids shrink and symptoms improve. There are no cuts, no scars and uterus is not removed from the body!
In other cases surgical myomectomy (fibroid removal) may still be necessary. However every effort is made to save the uterus. Talk to your doctor and discuss what is best for you.
