The overnight success of the Kashmiri musical album ‘Lolan’ released by Zee Music Company has put a spotlight on the new singing sensation of Kashmir, Rasiq Imtiyaz Khan.
Trained in Sufiya and Indian classical music, Khan took his inspiration from his father Imtiyaz Khan. Although ‘Lolan’ is Rasiq’s debut song released on the international platform, the grand success has an emotional story to it and twelve years of learning and struggle by the singer.
His father too was a singer and had tried his luck in Bollywood in 1997. However, he couldn't achieve his dream due to various reasons, especially family commitments. The popularity of Rasiq’s song made his father celebrate with the same happiness and passion after twenty-four years.
“My father lived his dream through me and encouraged me in my career,” said Rasiq.
“My success is arduous because I struggled a lot for the first break which made me a strong professional,” he said.
Rasiq started searching for a musical guru when he was just 16. After roaming to many places and music studios he finally met Yaqoob Sheikh, an Ustab of Sufiyana music who helped Rasiq to perfect his `sur’ and other facets of singing.
Rasiq had also tried hard to get admission to the Institute of Music and Fine Arts but did not succeed. Hailing from Gopalpora in Budgam district, Rasiq was among the top three finalists of a musical reality show.
“The show never broadcasted which made me sad but never stopped me from trying,” he said.
The hurdles, discouragements by some people and institutions did not deter him from pursuing his goal.
“Hard times motivated me, that is why I could compose and sing Lolan in the pandemic,” he said.
A big fan of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Rasiq said his dream is to sing with him as a playback singer.
“They are worried about me and that is why they don’t allow me to move outside Kashmir but I will convince them for that,” he said.
His dreams are big but he has to go through more hurdles.
“InshaAllah I will achieve what I dreamt of. I just need a little more support and encouragement from people and the audience,” he said.
Team behind Lolan Song
The music video was conceived and directed by Saqib Wani, a Kashmiri actor who also made his debut with ‘Lolan’ album along with the co-actor Bismah Mir. The song released by Zee Music Company received an overwhelming response across the globe.
According to Wani, direction is an interesting and creative field so he wanted to try his hands on it.
“Luckily it worked and we released a music song ‘Lolan’ which got love from people all over the world,” he said.
“It was a really challenging role to play because of two reasons: the audience and the climate. It was freezing cold in Kashmir and the lockdown was also a hurdle for us,” he said.
The story of the song Lolan revolves around the pain and agony of a guy who accidentally meets a girl on the street, helpless and needy. Suffering from partial memory loss, the guy helps her and falls in love but in the end, has to face the heartbreaking separation.
“We shot in some beautiful places and the song was in regional language with limited reach but with a story and direction it worked beautifully and people loved it across the world,” he said.
The music has been sung and composed by  Rasiq Imtiyaz Khan while Ghulam Mohammad Mir wrote its lyrics. Aarif Mir is the music producer.
“We first made the song under the local banner DK Films & Entertainment then after internal reviews pitched to Zee Music Company,” Rasiq told Rising Kashmir.
He said the music album has been produced by Danish Kak and Umar Nisar while Ada Bhar managed its production.
“It was a strong team effort and paid off well,” said Rasiq.
“We are planning more such musical albums to promote local language and music,” he said.
