With the onset of the spring season as flowers blossom, many people suffer from pollen-induced allergy, with hay fever, sore throat and cough a few of the common symptoms.
Ulfat Manzoor, 27, never walks around without a mask and handkerchief as the seasonal allergy causes problems for her.
"I have tried anti-allergic drugs and other medicines prescribed by doctors. It works for a while, but whenever I am exposed to pollen and other environmental factors. My allergies come again,” she said.
Like her, many other people complain about allergies with the onset of spring season.
In this season, trees, grasses, and weeds release tiny grains into the air to fertilise other plants leading to many allergic infections.
Fever, common flu, itchy and watery eyes, congestion of nose and sore throat or a cough, and food allergies are usually the common symptoms of seasonal variations.
Doctors have advised people to take medications, more fluids, hygienic foods, and covering nose and mouth to combat the seasonal allergies.
According to the valley doctors, the spring season can be a challenging time for asthmatics patients.
“Allergies are very common at this time of the year. People need to take extra care in this season. If people have a sore throat or a cough, then it is time for them to see a doctor,” Dr Khurshid Ahmad Dar, an Associate Professor at the Chest Diseases Hospital.
He also said that the common symptoms of pollen-induced allergy include nasal irritation, running nose and red and watery eyes, which may further aggravate if medical advice is not sought by the affected persons.
“Once the flowers start blooming, we receive some patients with allergies associated with the pollen and other environmental allergens. People get nasal congestion that shapes up over time and can develop in your sinus cavities as well. If there is no good way for those sinus cavities to drain, you can develop a sinus infection,” he said.
He also advised chronic chest disease patients to take extra precautions like vaccinations, hygiene maintenance, especially medicines prescribed by their doctors.
Doctors said that there are intrinsic and extrinsic allergies and people often get confused about it.
“Allergic asthma is also known as extrinsic asthma and the symptoms are triggered by allergens such as dust mites, pollen, and pet dander. When some people breathe in allergens, the tubes in their lungs become inflamed. While, Non-allergic, or intrinsic asthma, can be triggered by other factors such as anxiety, stress, exercise, cold air, and viruses,” they said.
Doctors said that elderly, ailing, and people with low immunity, should consult a doctor if their symptoms are severe or get prolonged.
“If people have symptoms and wait too long before getting help or taking medicine, they can get sick,” doctors said.
Like other allergies, there are skin related complications which are very common in this season.
“Some people have bad skin reactions, like flare-ups of eczema, skin rashes, dermatitis because we have histamines and allergy cells throughout our entire body,” said Dr Mohiddin, a Dermatologist.
He also said the allergy symptoms vary from person to person. “Some people, especially children, have itchy eyes which are very mild.”
“I have seen patients with swollen red eyes. So in that condition, they should consult a doctor. Such children while going out should use goggles at least in the spring season,” he said.
