Srinagar, June 25: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday termed the PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti's allegations regarding the death of a terrorist from Shopian in an encounter as baseless.
The police said that the terrorist, Showkat Ahmad Shiekh of Shopian who was killed in Kupwara encounter, was a mastermind of Sedow IED blast and was involved in multiple terror crimes.
Mehbooba on Saturday questioned the killing saying, “A blast happened in Shopian in a Sumo. They arrested the driver Showkat Ahmad Sheikh & took him in custody. After 10 days they say he was killed in an encounter in Kupwara. But how did he reach there from custody?"
Responding to allegations of the PDP President, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said they have already issued a detailed press note of the encounter on June 20.
“His involvement in terror related activities was also shared," police said.
Police on June 20 had said that two Pakistani terrorists were neutralized in the Chandigam Lolab area of Kupwara while 02 more terrorists were killed Monday taking the toll to four.
Police identified the slain terrorists including three Pakistani terrorists as Bambar Khan, Al-Bakash, Aftab Bhai of proscribed LeT outfit, and a local terrorist Showkat Ahmad Sheikh resident of Sedow Shopian.
Police had said that it was on the disclosure by Sheikh that operation in Chandigam was luanched. Besides, police said, “Showket was the mastermind behind an IED blast in a private vehicle at Sedow Shopian in which one soldier was killed and another injured.”
“During his interrogation, it was revealed by Shiekh that he used to ferry terrorists and arms, ammunition from Lolab to Shopian. Kupwara police got his custody changed by the order of Hon’ble court and arrested him in one terror-related case,” he said.
A police spokesman said during his interrogation in Kupwara, Showkat revealed sensitive information related to terrorists operating in Lolab valley of Kupwara.
“One his discloser an operation was launched and he was also got trapped in initial encounter in which one foreign terrorist was neutralized. Several attempts were made to rescue him but he also got neutralized in the firing of terrorists. Later on, two more foreign terrorists got neutralized,” he said.
The police have recovered incriminating materials, arms, ammunition including 02 AK-series rifles, 06 AK magazines, 01 M-4 rifle along with 01 Magazine and 03 live grenades from their possession, police had said.
