Jammu, Dec 05: Leading National Conference leaders and workers in paying homage to Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah on his 116th birth anniversary, Provincial President Rattan Lal Gupta Sunday said that maintaining the unity and single entity of Jammu and Kashmir will be a befitting tribute to the visionary leader, who fought all his life for wellbeing of the people and strengthening the bonds of communal amity, a party statement said.
Speaking at a homage-giving function held at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan here, Rattan Lal Gupta emphasized the crucial need of strengthening and sustaining the time tested unity, saying no society will progress if its foundations are laid on myopic considerations, the statement added.
“Secular bonding is the spirit which has all along guided National Conference,” Gupta said.
Gupta said the high point of Sheikh Abdullah’s legacy has been inclusiveness, tranquility and harmony between people belonging to various faiths and regions. There is immense need for carrying forward this legacy to build progressive, secular and peaceful Jammu and Kashmir, which is facing numerous challenges posed by divisive elements, he added.
In his tributes, former minister and senior leader Ajay Kumar Sadhotra said, “Sustaining secular ethos is the best and befitting tribute to Sheikh Sahib, a towering among tallest of leaders of his times in the sub-continent.”
“We are proud inheritors of this legacy,” he said, while recalling the landmark and pioneering Land Reforms Act, which empowered the farmers by making them masters of their own destiny overnight.
The party workers paid floral tributes to Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and pledged to work for steering Jammu and Kashmir as peaceful, progressive and a politically stable part of the country, the statement added.
