Srinagar, May 24: National Conference (NC) Tuesday denounced the move of Jammu and Kashmir government in which it had announced replacing the name of Sher-e-Kashmir embossed on the J&K Police medals for gallantry and meritorious service.
Opposing the move, National Conference state spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar called it an attempt to erase history and added that Sheikh Abdullah will continue to rule the hearts and minds of people in Jammu and Kashmir.
Stating that the actual change of nomenclature took place in 2019, Imran said, “Just to distract people from the Kashmiri Pandit protests and general failure of the JK administration, they are digging up old issues."
“With due respect to the National Emblem, these attempts to erase our history, identity and icon show nefariousness of those running the show. People of J&K have struggled on many fronts to be where they are now. They fought oppression, autocracy. No one can change that. Not by replacing or changing names. Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah will continue to rule the hearts of people of J&K, no matter what they or their masters do,” he further added.
Sheikh Abdullah was instrumental in suppressing people of Jammu,Ladakh: BJP spokesperson
Spokesperson of BJP, Brigadier Anil Gupta Wednesday took a strong exception to the statement of NC spokesperson that Sheikh Abdullah will continue to rule the hearts of the people of JK.
In a statement, questioning as to who has authorised him to make such a statement on behalf of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Brig Gupta said hold an opinion poll among the people of Jammu and Ladakh and you will get the true answer.
“Sheikh Abdullah was instrumental in suppressing the people of Jammu and Ladakh as well as for wilful destruction of Dogra heritage and identity. As far as Ladakh is concerned, it figured nowhere in Sheikh Abdullah's perception of Jammu and Kashmir.”
He further said that Sheikh was also responsible for denying the people of Jammu and Ladakh the deserved representation in the State Assembly, which has been rectified now by the award of the Delimitation Commission.
“The treacherous method through which he dethroned the Maharaja and then planned his exile with support of Pandit Nehru. His agrarian reforms were aimed at snatching the landed properties of the Dogras since the orchards were kept out of its purview. Even his title Sher-i-Kashmir smacks of regionalism,” BJP spokesperson said.
“JKP is the police of the entire Jammu and Kashmir and hence naming its medals of meritorious service and gallantry after an individual representing one region only was a mistake and has been justifiably rectified,” he said.
“Rather than welcoming the decision those who are trying to oppose it suffer from the same tunnel vision which the Sheikh had,” he added.
