Misuse of antibiotics during cold and flu

Flu or influenza occurs due to a range of viruses and in majority of cases, these infections are self-limiting and get cured themselves. Only, some symptomatic treatment for fever, running or stuffed nose, headache etc is required. However, they never require antibiotics which are basically meant for bacterial infections. So one should not take antibiotics during viral infections, including flu unless there's superadded bacterial infections which is characterized by thick purulent (yellowish) sputum or expectoration, prolonged fever and other constitutional symptoms.
