Eating too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, a risk factor for heart disease. Limiting salt (sodium) is an important part of a heart-healthy diet. The American Heart Association recommends that Healthy adults have no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium a day (about a teaspoon of salt). In hot countries like India when there is a lot of sweating, a bit higher amount may be allowed.
Here is how you can do it:
1. Reduce the amount of salt you add to food while cooking
2. Add no salt at the table
3. Avoid canned or processed foods, such as soups, baked goods and frozen dinners
4. Restaurant meals should be avoided
5. Be careful with condiments such as ketchup, mayonnaise and soy sauce
6. Packaged tomato juice to be avoided
