July relatively peaceful month of 2022: Officials

‘Only 8 deaths reported in terror incidents, counter ops in past month’

Srinagar, Aug 02: Officials on Tuesday said that eight deaths during the terror incidents and counter-insurgency operations respectively in July was the lowest number of causalities reported in a month this year in Kashmir.    
The officials said that the low deaths and less numbers of encounters in the past month suggest that July was a relatively peaceful month in 2022.
They say this may be because less movement of terrorists as forces are maintaining a heightened vigil in the wake of the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
 As per official figures, seven encounters were reported in the month of July, out of which security forces killed 5 terrorists and three security personnel were also killed.  Two operations were called off in south Kashmir.
Two Lasker-e-Taiba terrorists also surrendered during a live encounter in Hadigam, Kulgam on pleas of their family members who were brought near the operation site by security forces last month.
“So far this year 127 terrorists including 33 foreign terrorists have been killed in Kashmir. Out of 122, 84 terrorists were belonging to LeT and 28 from Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfit,” officials said.
On July 08, a soldier and terrorist were killed after a major infiltration bid was foiled by Army in Tangdhar sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
On 11th July, in Wandakpora area of Awantipora, two terrorists were killed in the operation.
On 12th July, a Police officer was killed while two constables were injured after terrorists opened fire on police team in Lal Bazar area of Srinagar.
On July 17th, an assistant sub-inspector of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed after terrorists attacked a joint check-post of security forces in Gangoo crossing area of Pulwama district.
On July 30 and 31, two local terrorists were killed during anti-terrorist operations in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
A top police official told Rising Kashmir that five terrorists were killed in July and there was less movement as forces are maintaining close vigil in view of Amarnath Yatra.
“Majority of the terrorists killed so far this year belonged to the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terror outfit,” he said.
The official said due to successful counter-terrorism operations, “there has been a reduction active 'terrorists' as their leadership and maximum terror structure has been damaged.”
The top police official said they will continue to work to counter anti-militancy activities and stated that the fight against ‘terrorism’ will continue until peace prevails in the region.
“Human and technical inputs are helping security forces to track the movements of terrorists and OWGs. In the first six months of this year more than over 20 active terrorists and 42 terrorist associates were arrested,” he said.
The officer appealed the youth who have joined terror folds to shun the path of terrorism and return to the mainstream.
Earlier this week, Director General of Police (DGP), Dilbagh Singh, said that narco-terrorism is the biggest challenge faced by the J&K Police in the prevailing times and Pakistan is hatching conspiracies to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in the region.
