Srinagar, June 11:  The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora, organised a field visit for its students to the office of English daily newspaper, Rising Kashmir, Press Enclave, here, on Saturday.
The field visit was held so as to help the students understand functioning of various departments of a print news organisation. The students were given a tour of all the important sections of the organisation, including newsroom, layout room, advertising section, administrative department and so on. The event was coordinated by Dr. Rabia Noor, Assistant Professor and Editor, DJMC, IUST.
While interacting with the students, Senior Editor of the organisation, Dr Raashid Maqbool, said journalism is a 24x7 job that mainly involves news gathering, processing and distribution. He described the printing procedure of a newspaper to students in detail. He discussed both traditional and new methods of newspaper printing.
He talked about the importance of hybrid newsrooms in today’s world, which, he said, are the need of the hour. “Traditional newsrooms have paved way to hybrid newsrooms since online media is picking up so fast,” he said.
Dr Maqbool also dealt at length with the history of print journalism, particularly vernacular press, in Kashmir. He gave an overview of how Rising Kashmir and its sister editions in the Kashmiri and Urdu languages were launched. He discussed how the newspaper transitioned from a weekly to a daily publication.
"Our main goal is to focus on women's health," said Dr Maqbool while referring to a section on health and hygiene. He further emphasized the necessity of passion in journalism. The interaction session was followed by a brief question-answer session.
