Baramulla, Jun 16: The Jammu and Kashmir police Thursday claimed to have arrested a driver reportedly involved in a hit and run case that caused the death of a pedestrian in Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
An official said that on May 11, a fast moving dumper crushed to death a pedestrian identified as Muhammad Maqsood, 32, of Sopore at Pattan.
"Instead of shifting the injured person to hospital, the erring driver fled from the scene. The injured person was taken to a nearby hospital by the locals, where he succumbed to his injuries," the police official said.
Police identified that driver as Mushtaq Ahmad Tantray, a resident of Sheeri Baramulla.
Following the incident, the Pattan police started investigation into the matter and after strenuous efforts located the dumper from a service centre in Srinagar.
“The driver had kept the offending vehicle bearing registration number JK05G 2601 at a service centre at Nowgam Srinagar for some modification so that vehicle involved in the accident is not identified,” said a police official.
He said after tracing the vehicle, the driver was arrested from his home at Sheeri in Baramulla.
“A case is already registered under Fir No 146/2022 in Police Station Pattan against the accused," he added.
