Flash floods damage paddy crop in Lolab

Srinagar, Aug 12: The paddy crops were damaged in Lolab area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district after massive rains triggered flash floods in the area.
As per the local residents, the nearby streams overflowed, resulting in the water entering the agricultural fields and residential area in the Chandigam village of Lolab Kupwara.
They said that "the flash floods were caused by a suspected cloudburst in the area." They added that the crops in large numbers were destroyed due to flash floods.
The affected farmers have urged the district administration to send a team of officials to assess the damage caused by the flash floods.
Fayaz Ahmad a local said that "at some locations the flash floods washed away the paddy fields." In addition, the flash floods also cause damage to roads in the locality.
Locals at Mandalpora have urged the district administration to construct protection walls along the rivulets to prevent frequent losses caused to the agricultural fields.
SDM Lolab Aijaz Ahmad said that his office has deputed teams to the affected areas to assess the losses. "The teams will assess the loss and it will be accordingly taken up with the higher-ups."
An official said that though the flash floods caused damage to standing crops, however fortunately there wasn’t any loss or injury reported in the incident.
