Pursuing medicine or engineering is no longer the only option with JK’s youth as they are trying their luck in many other fields which has a wider scope not only at the global platform but in J&K also.
One such booming sector is of makeup beauty industry. People have become more conscious about their skin and presentation giving a fillip to this industry.
Many young Jammu and Kashmir girls have seized this opportunity of boom in changing trends and ventured into the sector. Some have done special courses in it and some other are self-taught owing to their inherent knack for colours and styles.
Rising Kashmir’s reporter Misabah Bhat talked to few such girls who are happy and pleased with their decision of venturing into the industry as they feel they have been bringing smiles to many.

Makeup and Slay Studio
Looking good and presentable is everyone’s dream and to make others confident and happy by enhancing their facial aesthetics through makeup has been the passion of Fozia (37) and Hiba (24) for long.
The duo has been keen on different colours and design styles which motivated them set up ‘Makeup and Slay Studio’ in 2016. With their work, they have been making people happy by changing their appearances especially on special occasions.
They give credit for their success to their families who have always been very supportive for their work.
The duo works tirelessly to come up to the expectations of their clients especially brides.
What makes the studio unique is they work with subtle makeup to bring out the natural beauty of their customers.
“We rather focus on enhancing ones look and not changing it. Allah has created everyone perfectly and we just add colour to it.”
The duo artists advise youth to invest in their skin and hair because that makes them confident to face the world.
At the studio, the duo talk to their clients openly and understand their needs
“We talk to our clients frankly so that they are not confused about their likes and dislikes which helps us understand better their needs and with our experience and skill, we bring out best in them.”
Currently, the duo work in Kashmir and Delhi but are also planning to widen their base.

Makeup story by Sami
Another makeup artist, Sami Khankashi (30), from Shalimar has always loved to play with colours and found this profession suitable since it allows a lot of creativity and compliments her inborn knack for fashion and glamour.
Sami started doing makeup a few years back in Delhi and for two years she has been working in Kashmir.
“I did my beautician course where I learnt about different skin types which are the most important key for makeup,” said Sami.
Sami has worked very hard to achieve what she is today.
“This profession is not that easy. I have practised a lot to get it perfect. I have always given my 100 percent and went out of my comfort zone,” she said.
She went to different makeup academies to learn this art. She believes the biggest challenge for a makeup artist is they are required to remain up to date with new trends and fashion.
“The fashion industry evolves on daily basis, and we have to be aware of these trends and upgrade our makeup styles accordingly,” said Sami.
For Sami, the feeling of changing people's image to suit their mood or moment is endless.
Sami’s signature look is the traditional one for brides. She personally likes doing all kinds of looks-- Arabic, Pakistani makeup, or fashion looks.
“As a makeup artist, we should not be comfortable in just one style. We should master all styles and keep trying new looks on our clients,” she said.
“I always keep trying new things to create a different look, We should never run from experimenting with new styles and techniques.”
Sami has been influenced by Pat McGrath, a British makeup artist, and Atul Chauhan from India.
She believes practice makes a man perfect and makeup artistry is no exception.
"Practice is the key, learning from professional is important to become a truly great artist, but making practice part of your everyday routine is most important," said Sami.
Besides in Kashmir, Sami has worked in Delhi, Hyderabad and she hopes she will continue to do so.
Sami has done actress Mahira Sharma’s makeup and it has been an amazing experience for her.

Mahwish Tak Makeup
Mahwish Tak (28), an engineering graduate from Kishtwar, also chose makeup artistry and is now a well-established makeup artist. She has been vigorously watching YouTube videos to enhance her skills.
“I was in awe of the subtlety and at times boldness of makeup and the pull towards it was so strong that I decided to pursue it.”
Makeup has been her love since childhood. She would try and create makeup tutorials during her college years but never uploaded it on YouTube.
“I would ask my friends to be a muse for me and I would do their makeup and it helped me a lot in blending things up,” she said.
It has been one year since Mahwish started makeup artistry professionally.
“I am a self-taught artist but recently I got a professional makeup degree from Scandinavian makeup academy.”
Mahwish’s parents have been quite supportive, but the societal pressure did cause a slight concern to them.
“As they saw my work and my commitment to it, I received acceptance from them and my work got better,” said Mahwish.

She loves to see the sheer happiness on her client’s faces when she is done with their makeup. Her signature look is more about the Smokey eye makeup with a hint of bronze on the centre of lid with matte red lips.
She believes Jammu and Kashmir has so many amazing makeup artists and each one of them have got their own style and they are all remarkable.
“What I like most to do on brides is to try to keep everything minimalist. And don’t go over the top and just enhance the already stunning features they all have got,” said Mahwish.
She advises everybody to start taking care of their skin if they want the radiant glow and never forget to use SPF.
She loves Samaira Sandu’s work and believes she is natural when it comes to blending. She likes it because of the traditional touch in her work.
Mahwish as of now has worked in India only but hopes to go global soon.
