Srinagar, Aug 15: The 75th Independence Day celebrations went off peacefully across Kashmir and no untoward incident was reported anywhere in the region, police said on Monday.
The main function was held at Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket ground in Srinagar where Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha hoisted tricolor, inspected the parade and took the ceremonial salute.
Additional Director General of Police Vijay Kumar told Rising Kashmir that Independence Day celebrations went off peacefully in Kashmir and no untoward incident was reported in the Valley.
“We had placed elaborate security arrangements across the Valley to ensure peaceful celebrations. No untoward incident was reported anywhere in the Valley during the functions held in all districts in the region,” he said.
Another senior police officer said high-tech drones and CCTV were used to monitor the overall situation during the functions across Kashmir.
He said adequate security arrangements were put in place across Srinagar, highways, major junctions, and hot spots to thwart any untoward incident.
Most of the shops and business establishments remained shut in Srinagar while public transport, particularly buses and mini-buses remained off the roads.
However, private transport including cabs, cars, and auto-rickshaws were visible on the roads. The day passed peacefully in the entire region, the police officer said.
“Most government buildings, including educational institutes, hoisted the tricolor and sang the national anthem, and school heads later uploaded their videos online,” he said.
After reviewing the situation in Valley, this year police had decided not to snap mobile and internet services on 15th August.
Scores of activists gathered at historic Lal Chowk (Ghanta Ghar) and unfurled the national flag. There was no restriction on anyone hoisting the tricolor near the tower.
In north and south Kashmir districts, the national flags were hoisted by the DDC chairpersons. The Panchayati Raj Representatives unfurled the national flag at the district, sub-district, tehsil level, as well as in panchayats.
