Aharbal Summer festival aimed to promote adventure tourism: Dir Tourism

Kulgam, August 01: Director Tourism, Dr G N Itoo, on Monday said that the Aharbal festival, which was inaugurated on Monday, is an attempt to promote adventure tourism at this south Kashmir’s famed tourist destination.
The J&K Tourism Department in collaboration with the Kulgam District Administration held a summer adventure camp at Aharbal and several adventure sports related activities were held.
Speaking to reporters on the side-lines of the event, G N Itoo, Director Tourism said, “Aharbal is among 75 offbeat destinations identified in recent past. There is a lot of scope for adventure tourism here. And we have assessed the infrastructure requirement for Aharbal,”he said.
“A number of activities were part of today's summer festival, we have a group of national and local trekkers and they have been flagged off towards Kousarnag. It is a nature walk and angling tourism,” he said.
Dr Itoo said that the department was working to add 25 thousand beds for homestay or rented accommodation to cater to the tourist footfall in the peak of the season.
Meanwhile, the event focused on promoting tourism in the Kulgam district. Different activities were performed by a distinct group of people. A group of hikers went on a trek from Kongwattan to Kounsarnag. Under the supervision of the department of Fisheries, an angling competition on the Aharbal steam was also held.
DYSS department Kulgam organized a bicycle race in Aharbal which was also flagged off by Dir Tourism in which around 70 boys participated.
A unique activity “Heritage walk with fossil talk” that was part of offbeat Tourism was also organized by Kulgam Forest Division in coordination with Youth services and sports. It started from Guriwattan to the Fossil site.
Many students participated in the event and they were made aware about the presence of various types of fossils in the area.
