Srinagar, July 26: Several residential areas of HMT Srinagar and it’s adjoining areas Rose Avenue, Zainakote, Khusipora, and newly established colony areas on Tuesday complained of non-availability or defunct street lights in their respective areas.
Irfan Rasool, a resident of the Rose Avenue area of HMT said that it is too difficult to venture out in evening hours in the absence of street lights, specially with the people going to mosques for evening prayers.
“My father has to take a torch along while going to Mosque for prayers, and if by chance women or children get late to home, men have to move outside to accompany them as there are no street lights installed in our lane”, he said.
Ghulam Mohamad Alie, a resident of HMT Zainakote told Rising Kashmir that with every sunset their area reels under darkness as the majority of street lights are nonfunctional, at many places, there are no street lights.
“We have apprised concerned departments and officials many times, but despite repeated representations, there has been no response from them, while some of the street lights were installed in the past they stopped working after some time”, he said.
A top official of the Corporation told Rising Kashmir that 59000 plus street lights have already been installed in the city, in addition to that 1600 street lights with a wattage of 190 watts have also been installed on main roads.
“The street lights have been installed in all 74 wards. In case they are defunct anywhere please inform our control room they will be repaired immediately”, said an official.
Another official told that the corporation has deputed 16 teams in the entire Srinagar city to ensure that those lights which have become defunct are made operational, and said that they are also mulling installing the street lights in the areas which don’t have one.
“16 teams have been specially deputed for repairs and maintenance of street lights in the entire city, and where ever the street lights are nonfunctional people can call on the announced numbers”, he said.
The officer added that the corporation is mulling installing more street lights in the Srinagar areas which become dark during evening hours.
Meanwhile, a local Municipal Councilor of the area, Ghulam Rasool said that they have submitted the details with the corporation about the issue of non-availability and nonfunctional street lights in his ward, saying that they were informed there has been an issue with the PDD department regarding the usage of electricity for street lights.
“I agree there are issues with street lights, I have submitted a detailed report with the corporation, and I am expecting that the issue will get resolved as soon as possible, and work on street lights will be started as far as it’s installation or repairs are concerned”, he said.
Meanwhile, locals in the area appealed to the Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation to look into the delay in the installation of street lights and requested the Commissioner SMC to direct the concerned agency to install the street lights and make necessary repairs of street lights so that people in the area can venture in evening hours.
