Anantnag: May 29: A 3-day South Kashmir Cultural Festival was inaugurated at Government Degree College for Boys Anantnag here on Sunday by Vice Chancellor, Islamic University of Science and technology, Awantipora, Prof Shakeel Romshoo.
Organized by J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages in association with GDC Anantnag and other allied departments, the festival is part of a series of mega festivals being organized by JKAACL across J&K under the scheme “Promotion and Development of Cultural Festivals”.
On the inaugural day today, the students of Government Degree College for Women Anantnag presented welcome song. The main highlight of the festival was Qawali performance by celebrated Qawal-Jamil Rampuri whose mesmerizing qawalis evoked applause from the audience.
In his welcome speech Secretary, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and languages, Bharat Singh said that through mega festivals the Academy is trying to reach every segment of society, adding that the main objective of the scheme is to promote and develop culture at the grassroots level.
During the inaugural session noted Kashmiri writer, Ghulam Nabi Aatish presented keynote address in which he highlighted the cultural and literary traditions of South Kashmir.
In his remarks, chief guest, Prof. Shakeel Romshoo applauded the efforts of JKAACL in revival of cultural activities across the Union Territory. Prof Romshoo said that such endeavors help in revival of culture.
During the 3-Day festival a series of events including Qawalis, Sufi talks and Plays on Sufism will be held.
The inaugural day of the festival was attended by several noted academics and members of general public. Prominent among those who attended the function included Principal GDC Anantnag for Boys, Principal GDC Anantnag for Girls and noted Kashmiri academic, Prof Mohammad Zaman Azurdah who presided over the proceedings of technical session held on the topic “Cultural Traditions of South Kashmir.
The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Zahid Mukhtar while as Principal GDC Anantnag for Boys, Muzaffar Ahmad presented vote of thanks.
On the second day of the event, noted Qawals – Nizami Bandhu’s will perform at GDC Anantnag. A series of other events will also be organized.
